HRAs are the newest way to set up your health insurance benefits. They allow your employees to carry a debit card to cover day to day expenses and then to be ''reimbursed'' for them. The idea behind them is that the employer can implement a higher deductible (providing lower premiums) and offer the HRA to cover the smaller expenses that drive up the cost of insurance. The HRA legislation has been around for over 5 years, but few companies have taken advantage of them yet. If you have 4 or more employees, you can offer more than one health benefits level. For example, you can have a low deductible plan and an Health Savings Account. This way your employees have a choice in their benefits and their premium. It also works well for the employer. The employer can offer two or three levels of plans and make their contribution on the middle or lower cost plan. This will during these tough economic times keep the ER in the hunt with the benefits they offer.
